8 THINGS WE LOVED ABOUT MAD MAX

Armed with a bad attitude and a gnarly Aussie accent, Max is back and madder than ever. Through taking the idea of holding a grudge to a whole new level, Max sets out to prove to the wasteland that you should never, ever, mess with a man’s car.

Whilst there were many things we loved about the latest instalment to the Mad Max franchise, here’s a list of the top 8 favourite things about the game:

The World

The post-apocalyptic world of The Great White is sprawling and seamless, with locations a-plenty to discover, each unique in its own way. The territories, governed by individual leaders, each somewhat eyebrow-raisingly named (Scabrous Scrotus? Rim Jobbie? Really?) offer up different landscapes for Max to cruise around as he goes about his quest of ultimately retrieving his stolen V8 Interceptor. With a plethora of random encounters, encampments, minefields and more to explore, there’s seldom a dull moment. And whether you’re scavenging scrap for upgrades, or dismantling a large enemy base, The Great White offers up something for everyone, and does a great job at keeping you busy. The occasional storm – heralded by Chumbucket, turns the world into even more of a post-apocalyptic nightmare. And unless you run for cover, expect to be battered relentlessly by airborne hunks of metal.

Car Battles

It wouldn’t be Mad Max without some form of car combat, and ploughing through an enemy’s car at top speed never ceases to be enjoyable. With loyal ol’ Chumbucket sat out the back piling harpoon after harpoon into enemy drivers, doors and tires, Mad Max has really managed to nail vehicular skirmishes. A series of available upgrades for the Magnum Opus allows you multiple means of taking on your opponents, and with a variety of different enemies to challenge you throughout the roads of The Great White – car battles have never been better or more satisfying.

Upgrades & Customization

Mad Max excels at customization, offering up means of tweaking your car and your appearance, and giving you the ability to upgrade everything from your fighting moves to the effectiveness of your clothing for the price of some scrap metal. Once acquired, tokens can be turned in with the mysterious wastelander Griffa in exchange for enhancing Max’s skills with regards to maximum health, scavenging and his ability to manage resources. We were wondering why Max’s and Chum’s hot pink and blue Magnum Opus seemed to be attracting so much attention, but if you’re on a near-suicidal mission in a post-apocalyptic world, you want to look fabulous whilst doing it no?

Standalone Story

Those of you familiar with the Mad Max franchise and its storyline will be pleased (or not) to find that the video game’s story is not tied in to any of the movies. Although some of the same characters make an appearance, the game draws most of its inspiration from the idea of the post-apocalyptic world in which the movies were based, but isn’t necessarily the same one. The video game’s story revolves around Max trying to retrieve his stolen V8 Interceptor car, taken from him by Warlord Scabrous Scrotus in the start of the game. All this is done alongside his loyal new-found companion Chumbucket, who believes Max to be a saint sent by The Angel Combustion to aid him in his mission of building the best car the wasteland has ever seen – the Magnum Opus.

Chumbucket

Ah, Chumbucket. The faithful hunchback throws you enough compliments to give anyone a God complex. A dab hand at repairing your close-to-exploding vehicle, and despite his lop-sided eyes and undoubted lack of depth perception – he’s a sure-fire shot with the harpoon when needed. It’s a wonder the little guy survived for so long prior to meeting Max, but despite his incessant rambling and slight dash of insanity, Chumbucket’s a good guy at heart, and an even better car mechanic.

Close Quarters Combat

Simple yet satisfying, the Batman-esque fighting mechanics allow for those beautiful bone-crunching sounds with the connection of each blow. No matter how many enemies we encountered, we never grew tired of suplexing some poor War Boy into the floor, or turning feral in fury mode and knocking our enemies back into the pre-apocalypse.

Explosions

The game comes brimming with explosions, be it in the form of blowing an outpost sky-high or successfully t-boning some unlucky enemy’s car. Considering Max stands just metres away as he casually goes about detonating oil rigs and tanks, it’s a wonder his own ear-drums haven’t exploded themselves – or perhaps he just repairs them afterwards with scrap metal. Despite that, we never grew sick of the enjoyment to be had from shot-gunning some ill-fated enemy’s fuel tank from behind in the midst of a car chase – and the well earned slo-mo effect induced from causing explosions doesn’t cease to satisfy.

The Magnum Opus

With its creation decreed upon Chumbucket by The Angel Combustion herself, the Magnum Opus is meant to be the greatest car to have ever been built. The addition of the Magnum Opus to the new Mad Max storyline is a welcome one. With a range of customization options available, and Chum’s constant singing of the Opus’ greatness – it quickly becomes your baby as you tailor it to your exact desires.
